DC-to-AC Drive Conversion & Retrofit
Reach Out for a Practical Retrofit or Upgrade Plan Before Your Next Downtime Event
Modernize aging DC drives before the next failure decides for you
A DC-to-AC conversion can eliminate the obsolescence risks associated with aging DC drive systems by replacing legacy DC drives and motors with modern AC technology; however, conversion isn’t always the best approach.
SAF evaluates the existing drives, motors, controls and application requirements to determine the appropriate modernization strategy. Depending on the application, that may mean a DC-to-AC upgrade or a DC drive retrofit that retains the existing DC motor. SAF engineers, builds, commissions and supports either path.

When DC-to-AC conversion makes sense
Not every legacy DC drive system needs replacing. Conversion pays off when keeping DC becomes the bigger risk.
- Parts are drying up. Spares are scarce and one failure could mean a long outage.
- Downtime is climbing. Faults are more frequent and troubleshooting takes too long.
- The motors are due too. If DC motors need rebuilding anyway, converting the full drive train may make more sense.
- The line needs more. You need better diagnostics, or drives that work with modern controls.
When a DC drive retrofit is the better call
If your DC motors are sound or your power supply limits what’s practical, a DC drive retrofit can modernize control without replacing the motors. SAF still builds and supports its own DC drives, including the DD306/DD312 series. We’ll recommend the path that fits, even if it’s the smaller project.
“The best solution is not always the biggest or most expensive one. It is the right fit.”
What changes in a DC-to-AC upgrade
A conversion touches more than the drive. SAF scopes it all together, so there are no surprises at cutover.
| Area | What SAF plans for |
|---|---|
| Motors | New AC motors matched to your load and speed, torque or tension needs. |
| Drives and power | AC drive systems from low horsepower to thousands of HP, with low-harmonic designs where required. |
| Controls | PLC and HMI programming, drive setup and network integration. |
| Panels | Packaged drives and panels from our UL 508A / cUL certified shop. |
| Cutover | A plan built around your shutdown window, with in-house testing first. |
| Your team | Training, documentation and 24/7 support. |

Planning around downtime
Drive modernization shouldn’t turn into an extended outage.
- Scope early. Motor data, integration needs and site constraints are confirmed before design.
- Test first. Panels and controls are tested in-house before they ship.
- Phase the work. Drive by drive or section by section, where it makes sense.
- Validate before ramp-up. Stability is confirmed before full production resumes.
